Italy Digital Nomad Visa: rules coming into effect from April 2024

In 2022, Italy introduced new regulations to permit non-EU citizens who are digital nomads to come to Italy and spend a year living there while working remotely. However, no detailed implementing regulations had been issued until now, when new Digital Nomad Visa regulations have been implemented and are coming into effect from April 4th 2024.

The new Digital Nomad Visa is intended for non-EU citizens who carry out highly qualified work using technological tools which allow them to work remotely, either on a self-employed / freelance basis or for a company that is not established in Italy.

The new rules allow non-EU citizens to live in Italy by working remotely without being subject to the annual quotas that apply to residence permits issued for work-related reasons under the so-called “Decreto Flussi” pursuant to Legislative Decree No. 286 of 1998 (Testo Unico Immigrazione).

The digital nomad visa applies to both self-employed workers and employed (salaried) workers.
